The Real Enemies of Your Swimsuit (And the Ones That Are Totally Overhyped)

Ask any group of regular swimmers what ruins a swimsuit fastest, and you'll get a split room. Half will say chlorine, delivered with the conviction of someone who watched their favorite suit go gray by July. The other half will swear it's saltwater, sun exposure, or some combination of all three. And somewhere in the back, one person will quietly mention sunscreen — and everyone else will look confused.
Here's the truth: all of these factors affect your swimwear, but they don't all affect it equally, and they don't all affect every material the same way. The conflicting advice you've been getting isn't wrong, exactly — it's just incomplete. So let's actually break this down.
Chlorine: Guilty, But Complicated
Chlorine's reputation as swimsuit enemy number one is mostly deserved — but the full picture is more nuanced than "pool water bad."
Chlorine works by oxidizing organic matter, which is how it sanitizes pool water. The problem is that it doesn't stop at bacteria. It also oxidizes the elastic fibers in your swimsuit — specifically the spandex or elastane that gives the suit its stretch. Over time, repeated chlorine exposure breaks down these fibers at the molecular level, causing the fabric to lose elasticity, sag, and eventually thin out.
But here's the part that often gets skipped: it's not just the chlorine itself — it's the concentration and the contact time. A quick dip in a well-maintained pool with balanced pH is meaningfully different from an hour-long practice session in a heavily treated indoor lap pool. Nylon-spandex blends — the most common swimwear construction — are the most vulnerable here. Polyester-spandex blends hold up considerably better against chlorine, which is why competitive swimmers and fitness-focused swimmers often gravitate toward polyester suits. If you're doing regular lap swimming, fabric choice is your single most important defense.
Overhyped aspect of chlorine: The idea that your suit is ruined after one pool session. It's not. Proper rinsing in cold, clean water immediately after swimming removes most surface chlorine before it has time to set into the fibers. This single habit extends suit life dramatically — and most people skip it.
Saltwater: More Forgiving Than You Think
Saltwater has a gentler reputation, and for the most part, it's earned. Salt itself isn't particularly aggressive toward synthetic fabrics. The real issue with ocean swimming is the combination of salt, sun, and sand — and the fact that people tend to spend more total time in saltwater environments than they do in pools.
Salt crystals, when left to dry on fabric, are mildly abrasive. They can work into the weave of a suit and, over time, contribute to pilling and surface wear. This is especially true if you're lounging on the beach in a wet suit, letting it dry in the sun repeatedly without rinsing.
The sun component is significant. UV radiation degrades both color and fiber structure, and saltwater environments typically mean prolonged sun exposure. Fading, brittleness, and loss of elasticity can all accelerate when salt and UV are working together.
The fix is simple and the same as for chlorine: rinse your suit in cold fresh water after every ocean swim. This removes salt crystals before they dry into the fabric. It takes thirty seconds and makes a real difference.
Overhyped aspect of saltwater: The idea that ocean swimming is inherently harder on suits than pool swimming. For most recreational swimmers, the opposite is often true — pool chemicals are more aggressively degrading than salt, especially for nylon-based suits.
Sunscreen: The Villain Nobody Saw Coming
This is where things get genuinely interesting — and where most swimwear care advice falls completely flat.
Sunscreen, particularly chemical sunscreen formulas containing avobenzone, oxybenzone, or octinoxate, can cause significant and sometimes irreversible damage to swimwear fabrics. These UV-filtering compounds react with synthetic fibers in ways that cause discoloration (orange or rust-colored staining is common), breakdown of the fabric surface, and in some cases, structural weakening.
Mineral sunscreens — those formulated with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients — are considerably safer for your suit. They sit on top of skin rather than absorbing into it, and they don't carry the same reactive compounds that chemical filters do. If you've ever noticed weird orange splotches on a light-colored suit that you can't explain, your SPF is almost certainly the culprit.
The issue is compounded by timing. Most people apply sunscreen and then put on their suit, meaning the product transfers directly to the fabric before it has a chance to fully absorb. Letting sunscreen absorb for at least 15 to 20 minutes before suiting up reduces — though doesn't eliminate — the transfer.

The combination of elevated temperature, high chlorine concentration (hot tubs typically require more disinfectant than pools), and bromine (used in many residential hot tubs) accelerates fabric degradation at a rate that makes regular pool swimming look gentle by comparison. A suit that lasts two full swim seasons in a lap pool might start showing serious wear after just a few months of regular hot tub use.
If you use a hot tub frequently, designate a specific suit for it — one you're willing to retire sooner — and keep your nicer pieces for the pool and ocean.
The Actual Priority List
If you want to protect your swimwear investment in order of what matters most:
- Rinse immediately after every swim. Cold fresh water, every time, no exceptions. This is the highest-impact habit with the lowest effort.
- Watch your sunscreen. Switch to mineral-based formulas or at minimum let chemical sunscreen fully absorb before suiting up.

- Hand wash in cold water, lay flat to dry. Machine washing and heat drying are unnecessary stressors that shorten lifespan without any real cleaning benefit.
